Distinguished and Famous people from Walkerville

🐑 Byron Hugh MacLachlan

Pastoralist Byron Hugh MacLachlan made his town home at Aston in Gilberton from 1940, remaining associated with the house for forty-six years. His business interests extended across a large network of sheep stations in several states. The villa offers a local view of a pastoral career often described through distant properties: rural businesses were also administered from suburban homes. Built in 1898 for the De Rose family, Aston passed through several owners before MacLachlan's long occupancy. The Walkerville heritage survey records that association as part of the house's significance and the district's social history.

🍺 Frederick, Hannah and Vincent Simpson

Frederick John Simpson took over the Buckingham Arms in 1868 after earlier training as a piano builder in England. On his death, Hannah Simpson became licensee, and their son Vincent later ran the hotel for many years. The family's activity extended into surrounding houses, shops, a smithy and council premises. Their story connects an enduring local meeting place with the business of building a neighbourhood around it. The change from piano making to hotel keeping also supplies a memorable occupational turn in a family history closely woven into Gilberton's streets.

💡 Geoff Gerard

Geoff Gerard made his home at Medindie while helping develop one of South Australia’s important manufacturing businesses. Working with his brother Ken, he led Gerard Electrics Manufacturers, whose Clipsal fittings and expanding plastics operations were produced at Bowden. Geoff supplied the commercial drive while Ken brought engineering and plastics expertise. Beyond business, Geoff was active in manufacturing organisations, Rotary and educational philanthropy, including helping establish Prince Alfred College’s foundation. At home he enjoyed the garden and social tennis. Medindie was his residential setting; the factory work belongs to Bowden, and his brother’s Medindie Gardens address was in neighbouring Prospect.
